Playwrite is a typeface engine designed to generate primary school cursive fonts. It finds particular relevance in Vietnam, where a standardized handwriting model, known as mẫu chữ thảo tiếng việt or Vietnamese official cursive script, was implemented in 2002 for primary education. This model, employed from the academic year 2002-03 onwards, instructs students in both upright and optional sloped cursive writing, bypassing the teaching of print letters. However, students do engage in practicing fundamental strokes that form the basis of letter construction. Handwriting instruction spans Grades 1 to 3, with students transitioning from pencils to fountain pens within primary school. Playwrite emulates the structure and proportions of the upright, monolinear form of the Vietnamese official cursive script, which are prioritized in teaching. Alternative forms may be introduced situationally. The letter designs, inspired by traditional French vertical cursive, exhibit extended ascenders and descenders, along with rounded and fully connected lowercase letters. Letters like 'b', 'r', 'v', and 'w' utilize knots for stroke direction changes, 'n' and 'm' possess curved entry strokes, and 'x' is constructed from two mirrored curves. Distinctive uppercase characteristics include the decorative triangular shapes of 'A', 'V', and 'W', and an 'S' with a vertical spine.

PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.

The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

In Vietnam, an official handwriting model for teaching in primary schools was adopted in 2002. It is called the mẫu chữ thảo tiếng việt, or Vietnamese official cursive script, and has been in use from academic year 2002-03 onwards. Based on this model, students learn to write in both upright and (optionally) sloped cursive letters, without ever being taught print letters. Nevertheless, they do practice drawing the basic strokes that make up letters in preparation. Handwriting education happens between Grades 1 to 3, and while students are introduced to writing using a pencil, they graduate to writing with fountain pens while they are still in primary school.

Playwrite VN characteristics
The model follows the structure and proportions of the upright, monolinear version of the Vietnamese official cursive script. These are the versions that are prioritised for teaching, while others may be introduced if the situation is conducive. The letter shapes derive from the French traditional vertical cursive writing, featuring long ascenders and descenders and round and fully joined lowercases. Letters 'b', 'r', 'v', and 'w' make use of knots to change the stroke direction, 'n' and 'm' have curved entry strokes and 'x' is created by means of two mirrored curves. Notable upper case features are the triangular yet decorative shapes of 'A', 'V' and 'W', and an 'S' with an upright spine.
