Playwrite is a typeface engine designed to create cursive fonts specifically for primary school education. This focus stems from the widespread use of écriture cursive, a traditional vertical cursive style, in French schools. Écriture cursive draws inspiration from the Lettre Ronde, a script originally written with a broad nib pen and ink. Students traditionally learn écriture cursive using Séyès lines, a system of horizontal and vertical guidelines introduced in grande section (kindergarten). Created in 1892, Séyès lines help students understand the proportions of letters and the formation of ascending and descending strokes. In 2013, the French Ministry of Education sought to modernize handwriting instruction by releasing two free digital typeface families: Écriture A, designed by Laurence Bedoin-Collard and Heloísa Tissot, and Écriture B, by Marion Andrews. These fonts, available on the Ministry's website, are accompanied by resources for teachers, including information on letter shapes, proportions, and the most effective ways to connect letters in words.

SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------

PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.

The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

DEFINITIONS
"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.

"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).

"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).

"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.

"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical
writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software.

in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.

2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy
contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be
included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or
in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.

3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding
Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as
presented to the users.

The écriture cursive, or traditional vertical cursive, is the most used approach to handwriting teaching in schools in France. Its forms are inspired by the Lettre Ronde, originally written with a broad nib pen and ink. Students learn écriture cursive by writing letters over Séyès lines, which are introduced during grande section. Created in 1892, Séyès lines are a system of horizontal and vertical guidelines that govern the proportions of letters, and their ascending and descending strokes.

In an attempt to reform and modernise handwriting teaching in schools, the Ministère released two digital typeface families in 2013 — Écriture A by Laurence Bedoin-Collard and Heloísa Tissot, and Écriture B, by Marion Andrews. Both fonts are available for free on the Ministère’s website, along with information for teachers about the shapes and proportions of letters, and how to connect them to form words in the most logical way possible.

Playwrite France Traditionnelle Characteristics
Closely following the Écriture Droite structure, this upright continuous cursive showcases very long ascenders and descenders and is characterized by round shapes that are executed slowly. The uppercase letters are decorative, with some, like 'R' and 'Y', designed to facilitate connections to subsequent letters. The lowercase 'f' features a mirrored bottom loop. Additionally, letters 'm', 'n', 'v', 'w', 'y', and notably 'z', start with a curved entry stroke, enhancing the fluidity of the script.
