During a type design initiation workshop by Lucas Descroix in March 2021, an experimental hand-lettered typeface called Gotta Catch Psychic was created. The challenge given to each student was to create a display typeface inspired by a type of Pokémon. To achieve a unique and interesting visual concept, the students started by collecting words and images, and then explored abstract rhythms by hand. The main objective was to look beyond the usual typography influences and inspirations and create unexpected letterforms. The end result was Gotta Catch Psychic, a typeface that was born from the fusion of the Pokémon universe and the creativity of the students.
Gotta Catch is a typeface family created by the students of the DNMADE ‘Graphisme augmenté’ (Lycée Jacques Prévert, Boulogne-Billancourt, Fr), during a type design initiation workshop given by Lucas Descroix in March 2021.
Each student was asked to create a display typeface based on a type of Pokémon. In order to get an interesting conceptual distance they first gathered words and images, then explored abstract rhythms by hand.
