During a type design initiation workshop conducted by Lucas Descroix in March 2021, the experimental hand lettered typeface, Gotta Catch Bug, was created. As part of the workshop, every student was tasked with developing a display typeface inspired by a Pokémon. To achieve a unique conceptual distance, the students began by gathering words and images, and then proceeded to explore abstract rhythms using their hands. The objective was to draw inspiration from diverse sources outside the realm of typography, with the aim of generating novel and unconventional letterforms.
Gotta Catch is a typeface family created by the students of the DNMADE ‘Graphisme augmenté’ (Lycée Jacques Prévert, Boulogne-Billancourt, Fr), during a type design initiation workshop given by Lucas Descroix in March 2021.
Each student was asked to create a display typeface based on a type of Pokémon. In order to get an interesting conceptual distance they first gathered words and images, then explored abstract rhythms by hand.
