TT Nooks: An Experimental Font Family with High Contrast Serif and Upright Italic Subfamilies

TT Nooks, an experimental font family, comprises of two subfamilies, namely, TT Nooks and TT Nooks Script. While the former is a high contrast serif, the latter is an upright italic. Despite their distinct styles, both subfamilies have similar proportions, which help them blend in seamlessly. Each subfamily includes four weights, namely, Light, Regular, Bold, and Black. TT Nooks is a chic, high contrast serif font with a hint of self-centeredness. If it were a person, it would be a confident and independent lady. The initial sketches of the font had traces of a broad pen, but as it evolved, it retained only the high contrast strokes, and acquired a touch of geometricity. The serifs in TT Nooks are shaped like slippers, which add stability to the font and help balance the black and white ratio of the letters. TT Nooks has both small capitals for Latin and Cyrillic alphabets and a set of stylistic alternates that make the font more geometric. The font also has more than 25 ligatures, including ligatures for capital letters, slashed zero, and other OpenType features. TT Nooks Script is a complementary subfamily designed to extend the scope of the main family. The bold and light fonts of TT Nooks Script have distinct character forms. The aperture of Black & Bold characters is open, while the aperture of Regular & Light characters is closed. TT Nooks Script also has small capitals for Latin and Cyrillic alphabets, ligatures, oldstyle figures, and other OpenType features. In light faces, TT Nooks Script has a humanistic touch, with artifacts that mimic the continuous movement of a flat pen. In bold faces, the font has a dense and dynamic typing rhythm, with letters that begin to geometrize. The designers had the challenging task of maintaining the continuity of forms between bold and light faces, which they achieved through a found rhythm and proximate stylistic solutions.
