Regular Fonts: An Experimental Typography Project

Regular Fonts is an experimental typography project that began in 2017 at a workshop. The basic principles involve placing each letter on a grid and redistributing the black matter on the outline of each square. This redistribution creates a visual effect where the size of the typeface display has a strong impact on our ability to read the letters. From the abstraction of large letters to the legibility of small ones, and from the abstraction of a single letter to the legibility of a group of letters, this project explores the relationship between perception, reduction, and technology.

Inspired by techniques such as subpixel rendering, hinting, and font rasterization, which aim to achieve a rendering close to the designer's vision even with low screen resolutions, Regular Fonts also examines the impact of print technologies on type design. Projects like Muir McNeil's TenPoint and Dwiggins' M-Formula also delve into these questions in different ways.

While Regular Fonts is still a work in progress, with many details to be refined and the potential for evolution or change, it has been generated using Times, Standard by Bryce Wilner, and Durandus digitized by Rafael Ribas, Alexis Faudot, and Jerome Knebusch.
