Loise, a beautifully crafted handwritten script, is a digitized version of a typeface designed by Ange Degheest. During his tenure as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Rennes from 1961 to 1979, Degheest delved into engraving, specifically the works of 17th century engraver Robert Cordier, who had a lasting impact on Degheest's apprenticeship years at the Shom. Degheest, inspired by Louis Barbedor's Italian letters, engraved models of handwriting by master writers, and used them as a basis for creating a new typeface. Loise, with its emphasis on monolinearity, is built on a mechanical structure reminiscent of neon sign aesthetics. In 1972, Degheest presented this typeface to Mecanorma, a French graphic supplies company that was flourishing at that time. Loise would be distributed on transfer letter plates and would become one of the original characters in the Norma Type catalog. The name Loise is a nod to Louis Barbedor's first name and to the celebrated woman of letters, Louise Michel, whom Degheest admired greatly.
