Tartarelli translated Calvino's emphasis on exactitude and visibility into a typographic form inspired by the sixteenth-century garalde typography. By drawing upon the calligraphic art of Gudrun Zapf, Tartarelli balanced the formal rigour with lightness and quickness.
The Calvino type family offers a range of weights that cater to both display and text use cases, reflecting the idea of multiplicity that was central to Calvino's work. Furthermore, the Calvino Grande sub-family expands the design space, providing users with a full typographic palette to cover all editorial needs. With its condensed proportions, sharper details, and tighter metrics, Calvino Grande complements Calvino while retaining the same formal structure.
The Calvino family comprises 34 weights, each equipped with an extended Latin and Cyrillic charset that covers over two hundred languages. Additionally, all weights come with a wide range of open type features, including positional numerals, alternate forms, and stylistic sets. The package also includes four variable typefaces that allow for fine-tuning the typeface grade of weight.
